Webaroo : download content from internet offline

Published by POM under Product Review

Webaroo

Webaroo is a powerful service designed to allow users to search for content on the Internet and download it for offline viewing on the move later, both on laptops and PDAs, and to a lesser extent, desktops. This is useful, since it allows users to access the content of their choice from the Internet even when there is no connection to the network. Additionally, since the content is stored locally on the device or laptop, it loads a lot faster compared to browsing the Internet over regular network connections.

Webaroo works by utilizing a locally installed software component as well as a web based content service, which work together to create a powerful and practical user experience in accessing offline web content. The software component comes in three versions targeted at different platforms. Webaroo v1.3 is designed for laptops and desktops running Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000, and requires at least Microsoft .NET 2.0 Framework, which is downloaded automatically if not present during the installation process.

Webaroo is also available for the mobile platform, specifically mobile phones with support for Java MIDP 2.0. Users will also have to have an active data plan with their mobile operator to be able to download the setup program and more importantly the web content to be browsed offline. To obtain the software, all that needs to be done is to navigate the mobile browser to http://www.webaroo.com/m, and the Webaroo mobile software will be downloaded and installed automatically to any supported mobile. A full list of compatible devices can be found at http://www.mobile.webaroo.com/supported-devices.

Even more interestingly, Webaroo is also available on portable drives, which can be any of either a USB device, U3 device, SD Card, CF Card, memory stick or any other portable storage device. Users are able to choose between Webaroo v1.3 for portable storage and Webaroo v1.3 for U3 devices, depending on their needs and device platforms. At the time of writing, PQI, the USB storage device manufacturer has released the H Series USB device with Webaroo pre-installed on it. This makes is much easier for users to get up and running with this innovative and powerful software.

Once you have decided on which platform best suits your needs and have downloaded and installed the Webaroo software on it, the next step would be to obtain the content to be viewed with Webaroo. This can be done easily by heading to http://www.webaroo.com/. At this main page, users are presented with what are known as Web Packs. Essentially, web packs are highly relevant, size-optimized sets of websites, pictures and other content related to a particular topic. Users are able to peruse through the hundreds of packs which are readily available for download, either by browsing through the featured web packs list or by searching for a particular web pack using the built-in search engine.

The total download size is displayed below the image and title of the webpack, which makes it easy for users to decide on which webpacks are suitable to their needs. This is important, since the size of certain webpacks can go up to several gigabytes. If the content you are looking for is not available as a ready-made webpack, you can always specify a custom website address and Webaroo will automatically download the content from the website based on your preferences and will create a webpack ready to be used with the Webaroo software. So, the next time you are on the move and need to be able to access relevant and up to date content on your laptop or portable device, be sure to equip yourself with Webaroo.
